Fill in PDF forms or make them fillable

Fill in forms, or detect and add fillable fields.

Two jobs in one place. If a PDF already has fields, every one of them is listed so you can fill it in and save. If it is a flat form made for printing, add your own text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns, lists and signature fields, or let the tool find the blanks for you.

Forms tend to ask for personal details. Here the PDF is filled in and saved inside your browser tab, and it is never uploaded.

How to fill in or create a PDF form

  1. Choose a PDF. Any existing fields appear under "Fill in", with the page each one is on.
  2. Type your answers, tick the boxes and pick from the lists.
  3. To add fields, pick a field type above the page and drag where people should fill in. Or select "Detect fields on this page" or "All pages" to find blanks, boxes and checkboxes automatically.
  4. Select a new field to set its Field name, its choices and whether it is Required.
  5. Tick "Lock the answers (flatten the form)" if nobody should change them, then select "Save form".

Field types you can add

  • Text box, for a single line or, with "Allow several lines", a whole paragraph.
  • Checkbox and Radio. Radio buttons that share the same question form one group, so only one answer can be picked.
  • Dropdown and List, with one choice per line.
  • Signature, an empty box where the recipient can sign in their own PDF reader.

Tips

Automatic detection looks for blank lines, empty boxes and small squares on the page, and names each field from the text nearby. Check what it found, and rename or remove anything that is wrong before saving.

Answers typed in non-Latin scripts, such as Hindi, Tamil or Arabic, are saved, and the reader draws them when the file opens. They can't be flattened here, so leave "Lock the answers" unticked for those forms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF fillable?

Open it here and select "Detect fields on this page" or "All pages". Check the fields it adds, drag in any that are missing with the field tools, then select "Save form".

Can I fill in a PDF form without printing it?

Yes. Type into the fields listed under "Fill in" and save. If the form has no fields, add text boxes first, or type straight onto the page with Sign PDF and its Text & date option.

Will the form work in other PDF readers?

Yes. Fields are saved as standard PDF form fields, which desktop readers, browsers and most phone apps can fill in.

How do I stop people changing my answers?

Tick "Lock the answers (flatten the form)" before saving, or run the finished form through Flatten PDF.

Is the information I type uploaded?

No. The form is filled in and saved by your browser on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
