Scan documents to PDF

Capture pages with your camera or phone photos.

Turn photos of paper documents into a PDF that looks properly scanned. Take pictures with your phone or webcam, and the tool finds the page in each photo, straightens it, crops away the desk and makes the paper white.

Everything happens in your browser, including the camera. Nothing is uploaded, which matters for ID cards, application forms, receipts and signed letters.

How to scan to PDF

  1. Select "Use camera" and then "Capture page" for each page, or "Add photos" to pick pictures you have already taken. You can also drop images onto the page.
  2. Photos taken or added this way open in the "Straighten and crop" editor. Check the corners, drag them into place if needed, then select Apply.
  3. Pick a Clean-up style: Document, Grayscale, Colour or Original.
  4. Choose a page size (A4, Letter or "Same as photo") and a file name.
  5. Select "Create PDF", check each page, and download your PDF.

Clean-up styles

  • Document removes shadows and uneven light and makes the paper white, like a flatbed scanner. Ideal for printed or handwritten text.
  • Grayscale removes the colour but keeps the photo otherwise as taken.
  • Colour boosts the contrast but keeps the colours, for certificates, stamps and coloured forms.
  • Original leaves the picture as it is, apart from the straightening and cropping.

Tips for good scans

Lay the page flat on a darker surface in even light, and fit the whole sheet in the frame with a little background around it. That helps the page edges to be found. If they cannot be, the photo is kept whole and you can crop it by hand.

The result is a PDF of images. To make the text searchable and copyable, run it through OCR PDF. If the file is large, Compress PDF can shrink it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan documents with my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser and select "Use camera", or take photos with the camera app and add them with "Add photos". There is no app to install.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Camera pictures and photos stay in your browser and the PDF is built on your device. Your browser asks for camera permission first; if you refuse, you can still add photos as files.

What if a page is cropped wrongly?

After the PDF is created, every page is shown under Pages. Select Adjust on the one that came out wrong, move its corners, then create the PDF again.

Is the scanned PDF searchable?

Not on its own, because each page is a picture. Use OCR PDF afterwards to add a hidden text layer, with 124 languages to choose from.
