Change, remove or blur a photo background
Change, remove or blur a photo's background on your device.
Put a person on a clean white, light grey or light blue background for a form or ID card, cut them out on a transparent background, or blur a busy room behind them. The person is found automatically, the edges around the hair are refined, and the photo is saved at its full size.
Many background removers send your photo to a server. This one finds the person inside your browser, using detection models served by this site, so the photo never leaves your device.
How to change a photo background
- Drop a photo of a person. The first time, the detector (about 20 MB) is downloaded from this site, so give it a moment.
- Under Background, choose Change colour, Remove or Blur.
- Pick a colour (White, Off-white, Light grey, Light blue or any other) or set the Blur strength. Edge softness makes the outline gentler or crisper.
- Drag across the preview to compare the Original with the New version.
- Choose a format under Save as and select "Save photo".
What each option is for
- Change colour fills the background with one plain colour, for forms, ID cards and profile pictures. The old background's colour is taken out of the soft edges, so no dark fringe is left around the hair.
- Remove makes the background transparent, saved as PNG or WebP because JPEG can't store transparency. See Remove background.
- Blur keeps the person sharp and softens everything behind them, much like portrait mode on a phone. See Blur background.
Honest limits
It is made for people: it finds hair, skin and clothes and treats everything else, pets and objects included, as background. It works best when the person stands out clearly. Hair against a wall of a similar colour, reflections in glasses and things held in the hand can confuse the edge, so check the preview before you save.
It needs a browser that can run WebAssembly and WebGL, such as an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Very large photos on iPhones and iPads are saved slightly smaller, because those browsers can't make bigger pictures.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to change the background?
No. The person is found by code running in your browser, with models downloaded from this site, and the new picture is made on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I make a passport photo with a white background?
Yes. If the photo also has to meet size and head position rules, use Passport & ID photo, which changes the background and crops to the official size in one go.
Why does it say no person was found?
The detector looks for people only. Use a photo where the person is clearly in view and not tiny in the frame, rather than a product, an animal or a landscape.
Which format should I save as?
JPEG for a coloured or blurred background, as most forms and sites expect it, and PNG or WebP for a transparent cut-out. Your photo's own format is chosen to start with.
