Type the size you need, such as 50 KB, and each picture comes out at or under it. Quality is lowered first, and a picture only loses pixels when quality alone can't reach the target, so you keep as much detail as the size allows.
Use it for upload limits on application forms, to email a batch of phone photos, or to make pictures lighter for a website. The photos are compressed by your own browser, so they are never uploaded or stored anywhere else.
How to compress an image
- Choose one or more pictures (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP), or drop them onto the page.
- Under Compress to, keep Target size and type the Target size (KB). Or choose Quality and set the slider; 60–80% suits most photos.
- If you like, choose Save as JPEG or WebP, and a Longest side (px) to scale big pictures down.
- Select "Compress image", check the before and after sizes in the notes, and download.
How the target is reached
The tool searches for the highest quality that fits your target. If even 30% quality is too big, it reduces the width and height as well, and the notes give the new pixel size. A picture that is already under the target, in the format you asked for, is kept exactly as it was instead of being saved again.
A KB here is 1000 bytes, the stricter way to count, so a file under 100 KB is also accepted by portals that count 1024 bytes per KB. For megabytes, multiply by 1024: 1 MB is 1024 KB.
Which format to save as
- Same as original keeps the type you started with, the safe choice when a form asks for a particular one.
- JPEG suits photos and is what most forms ask for. Transparent areas become white.
- WebP is usually smaller than JPEG at the same quality, but some forms and older programs don't accept it.
- PNG is lossless, so it only gets smaller with fewer pixels. Save PNG photos and screenshots as JPEG or WebP to shrink them most.
When a form also sets a minimum or exact pixels
This tool aims for a maximum. If a form also asks for a minimum size in KB, or an exact width and height, use Resize image, which has At least (KB) and exact sizes. For a signature, Signature for forms cleans and sizes it in one go.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a photo to 50 KB?
Type 50 into Target size (KB) and select "Compress image", or open Compress image to 50 KB, where it is already set. The notes show the final size, the quality used and whether the pixels were reduced.
Why did my picture get smaller in pixels?
Because quality alone couldn't reach the target. Large photos with small targets need fewer pixels. To decide this yourself, set a Longest side (px), such as 800, so the quality can stay higher.
Can I compress several photos at once?
Yes. Every picture is brought to the same target, and you can download them all together as a ZIP.
Does it keep the camera details and location?
No. A picture that is saved again is written fresh by your browser, without the camera details or GPS location phones store. Only a picture kept exactly as it was still has them.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs in your browser on your own device, so the photos stay private and there is no file size limit set by a server.
