Resize and clean a signature for online forms

Clean, crop and size a signature for a form.

Sign on paper, take a photo, and get a signature file that is ready to upload: the paper and shadows gone, the ink cropped and centred, and the result at the width, height and file size the application form asks for.

A signature is not something to hand to a stranger's server. Here the photo is cleaned and resized by your own browser, and the finished file is saved straight to your device.

How to resize a signature

  1. Sign in dark ink on plain white paper, then photograph or scan it in good light, without your shadow falling across it.
  2. Drop the photo. The paper is removed, and a green outline on Your photo shows the signature that was found. Drag across the photo to choose the area yourself.
  3. Type the Width and Height the form asks for, in Pixels or Centimetres, or choose a Form preset if your form is listed.
  4. Watch the Result while you adjust Background clean-up, Ink colour, Strokes, Straighten and Margin.
  5. Enter the form's file size range in Keep under (KB) and At least (KB), select "Make signature" and download.

What happens to your signature

  • Paper grain and shadows are cleaned away, leaving only the ink on pure white. Raise Background clean-up if marks remain; lower it if thin strokes start to break up.
  • The signature is cropped to the ink and centred in the size you set, with a Margin around it, so it is never stretched out of shape.
  • Ink colour can stay As written or become Darker, Black or Blue, and Strokes can be made Thinner or Bolder, which helps with a faint pen.
  • Straighten turns a slanting signature by up to 15° either way.

Getting the KB range right

Forms often give a range, for example 10–20 KB. A small, clean signature saved as JPEG can be only a few KB, below the minimum, so At least (KB) pads the file with an invisible comment until it is big enough. How it looks doesn't change.

Keep under (KB) lowers the JPEG quality if the file would be too big. Because portals count a KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes, the maximum is taken as 1000 and the minimum as 1024, and the file is accepted either way. Under the Result you can see the pixel size and roughly how many KB the file will be before you save it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize my signature to 10–20 KB?

Set the width and height from the form, type 20 into Keep under (KB) and 10 into At least (KB), and save as JPEG. The note confirms the final size. Check your form's notification for the exact numbers, as they differ from form to form.

Should I choose a transparent background?

Only if you will place the signature over a document yourself. A transparent background needs PNG. Most online forms want JPEG on white, which is the default.

What if no signature is found?

The ink was too faint or the photo was taken from too far away. Sign again with a darker pen on plain white paper and take the photo closer, in good light.

Can I add this signature to a PDF?

Yes. Save it as PNG with a Transparent background, then upload it in Fill & sign and place it on the page.

Is my signature uploaded?

No. Everything, from removing the paper to saving the file, happens in your browser on your own device.
