Compress PDF to 1 MB

Make PDFs smaller by shrinking the images inside.

A 1 MB limit turns up on online application forms, office systems and some email accounts, and a scanned report, a property document or a PDF full of photos breaks it easily. This page opens Compress PDF with the target set to 1 MB, which is 1024 KB.

Compression happens in your browser, on your own computer or phone. Nothing is uploaded, so it is fine for agreements, bank statements and other papers you wouldn't send to a stranger.

How to compress a PDF to 1 MB

  1. Add one or more PDFs, or drop them onto the page.
  2. Check that Largest file size (KB) shows 1024, or type 1000 if your portal treats 1 MB as one million bytes.
  3. Select "Compress". Each file is tried at several settings, and the gentlest one that fits is kept.
  4. Download the result, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Why 1024 KB, and when to type 1000

The target is counted in KB of 1000 bytes, so 1024 KB is 1,024,000 bytes. That is under 1 MB for portals that count a megabyte as 1024 × 1024 bytes. A few count it as exactly 1,000,000 bytes; if your upload is refused for size, set the target to 1000 KB and compress the original again.

What happens to a long document

With 1 MB to work with, a short document usually keeps its images at high quality. Long scans are different: a 40-page scanned report has only about 25 KB per page, so the tool may have to lower the resolution of every page a lot, or turn the pages into images at a low resolution. The note tells you how the target was reached.

Pages turned into images become flat pictures: their text can't be selected, and links and form fields stop working, although filled-in answers stay visible. Untick "If needed, turn pages into images to reach the size" to keep them.

If the result is hard to read, split the document into parts with Split PDF and upload them separately, or take out pages that aren't needed with Delete pages.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my compressed PDF still rejected as over 1 MB?

Some portals count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, slightly less than the 1,024,000 bytes used here. Type 1000 into Largest file size (KB) and try again. Check the notification for rules on file type and name too.

Can I compress a PDF to 1 MB on my phone?

Yes, in an up-to-date mobile browser. Big scans take longer on a phone, because the work is done on the device rather than on a server.

What if the PDF is mostly text?

Text-only PDFs are rarely over 1 MB. If yours is, it probably carries many embedded fonts or detailed drawings, which re-saving pictures can't reduce. Then only turning pages into images can bring it down, and the note tells you what was done.

Is it really free?

Yes, with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many files you compress.
