Compress PDF to 200 KB

Make PDFs smaller by shrinking the images inside.

A 200 KB limit is common on application portals where one upload has to hold a few pages: a certificate printed on both sides, a set of mark sheets, or an ID proof with its address page. This page opens Compress PDF with a 200 KB target already set.

Everything happens in your browser. The scans are re-saved on your own device and the result is downloaded straight back, so there is no upload, no account and no copy left behind.

How to get a PDF under 200 KB

  1. If the pages are in separate files, combine them first with Merge PDF, so the limit applies to the finished document.
  2. Add the PDF here. Target size and 200 KB are already selected.
  3. Select "Compress". The tool tries several settings and keeps the gentlest one that fits.
  4. Open the result and zoom in on the smallest print to check it is still readable before you upload it.

Sharing 200 KB between pages

The limit is for the whole file, so every extra page leaves less room for the rest. A single page in 200 KB keeps fine detail; four or five scanned pages have to give up more of it. The note after compressing says what was done, for example how many images were re-saved and at what quality, so you can judge how hard the file had to be squeezed.

When re-saving the scans isn't enough, pages can be turned into images to reach the target. That keeps the look of each page but makes the text unsearchable. Untick "If needed, turn pages into images to reach the size" if you would rather keep the text and accept a note when the file can't get small enough.

Make the scan lighter before you compress

  • Photographed pages with shadows and grey paper are much harder to shrink than clean scans. Scan to PDF straightens, crops and whitens phone photos of documents.
  • For typed or printed documents, set the scanner to 150–200 dpi and greyscale.
  • Leave out pages the form doesn't ask for, such as blank backs, with Delete pages.

Frequently asked questions

Should I compress each page and then merge, or merge first?

Merge first, then compress once. The tool can then share the 200 KB sensibly across all the pages, instead of you guessing a size for each part.

Can I compress several PDFs to 200 KB in one go?

Yes. Add them together and each one is brought under 200 KB separately. Download them one by one, or all at once as a ZIP.

Why is my text no longer selectable?

To reach 200 KB the pages were turned into images, and the note says so. Run OCR to make the text searchable again, or untick the option and compress the original again.

Is 200 KB counted the same way as on my portal?

Portals count a KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes. This tool uses 1000, the stricter of the two, so a file under 200 KB here is also under 200 KB there.
