Compress PDF to 2 MB

Make PDFs smaller by shrinking the images inside.

A 2 MB target suits big documents that still need to look good: a project report full of photos, a design portfolio, slides saved as PDF or a brochure. It keeps an email manageable and fits portals that cap files at 2 MB. This page opens Compress PDF with 2048 KB, that is 2 MB, already set.

The file is compressed by your browser on your own device, so unpublished work, client designs and internal reports never pass through anyone else's server.

How to compress a PDF to 2 MB

  1. Choose the PDF, or drop it onto the page.
  2. Leave the target at 2048 KB. For a portal that counts 2 MB as two million bytes, type 2000 instead.
  3. For a portfolio or technical drawings, consider unticking "If needed, turn pages into images to reach the size", so artwork is never flattened.
  4. Select "Compress" and compare the before and after sizes.
  5. Open the result and look closely at a photo-heavy page before you send it.

Where the megabytes usually are

PDFs exported from presentation or design software often carry photos at far more pixels than a screen needs. Re-saving those photos at a sensible resolution is where most of the saving comes from, and at 2 MB that is often all the tool has to do. Text, fonts, charts and drawings are left exactly as they were.

Some pictures are kept as they are, such as CMYK images from print work. If they take up most of the file, the target may only be reached by turning pages into images.

Sending large documents

  • If 2 MB isn't possible without spoiling the photos, send the document in parts made with Split PDF.
  • To send several documents as one, combine them with Merge PDF first, then compress the merged file.
  • Keep your original. Compressed copies are for sharing; print from the full-quality file.

Frequently asked questions

Will compressing to 2 MB make my photos blurry?

Usually not noticeably on screen. The tool keeps the gentlest setting that fits, from high quality at 300 dpi downwards, so it only steps down as far as it needs to. Zoom in on a photo to check before you send it.

Why didn't my PDF shrink much?

If it is mostly text and vector drawings, there are few pictures to re-save, and text is compact already. When the target can't be reached, the note explains what is taking up the space.

Can I do this on a Mac or a phone?

Yes. It runs in any up-to-date browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS. Large files take longer on older phones, because the device does the work.

Are my files stored anywhere?

No. They are opened, compressed and saved by your browser, and closing the tab clears everything. There is no account and no server copy.
