Canadian passport photos are larger than most: 50 mm wide and 70 mm high, with the face measuring 31 to 36 mm from the chin to the crown of the head. This page opens the photo maker with the Canadian rules loaded, so you can see straight away whether a photo has the right framing.
Everything happens in your browser, so you can try as many photos as you like without uploading any of them.
How to prepare a Canadian passport photo
- Country and Document are already set to Canada and Passport.
- Drop a recent photo with a neutral expression and your mouth closed.
- Let Auto-fit size the face, or drag and zoom until the guides turn green at 31 to 36 mm.
- Keep Background on "As required" for a plain light background, then select "Make photo".
- Take the result to your photographer or print it at actual size for a quick check against the frame.
The rules in brief
- Size: 50 mm wide × 70 mm high.
- Face: 31 to 36 mm from the chin to the crown.
- Background: plain white or light-coloured.
- 2 identical photos, taken within the last 6 months.
- Clear glasses only if there is no glare; no tinted lenses.
Prints and online renewal
Canada expects professionally printed photos, and for new adult and child passports a guarantor signs the back of one of them, so most people use a commercial photographer for the final prints. Use this page to plan the framing, check a photo you already have, or make practice prints. Online renewal uses a digital photo from a commercial photographer with its own rules; it is listed separately in the Document menu. See the official photo rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Canadian passport photo 2 × 2 inches?
No. It is 50 × 70 mm, which is taller than the 2 × 2 inch US size. Canadian visas use a different, smaller size again.
Can I take the photo at home?
You can take and check it at home, but the final prints usually need to come from a commercial photographer. This tool helps you see how the framing should look first.
What about a Canadian visa or citizenship photo?
Choose Canada and then Visa, Citizenship or Permanent resident card in the Document menu. Each has its own size and rules.
